DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Fly More Combo

Update 19th March 2018. New price from DJI sees the price of the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum - Fly More Combo drop by $300. This huge drop means that most of my next paragraph is ancient history. I will leave it there though as the point other than price still remain. The Mavic Platinum compared to the Mavic Pro is now value for money especially when you consider that you are buying the newest model.

Is the Mavic Pro Platinum vs Mavic Pro, value for money / worth the extra bucks? DJI make two claims of difference. One is that the noise has been reduced by 60%, which is, BY THE WAY, only 4db. (Which is probably of interest to Cattle Farmers trying to check on stock but not spook the cows.) Two, flight time, an extra 2-3 minutes. I fly the Mavic Pro and I can tell you that estimates of actual!!!! flight times are way off. As far as flight time goes, you can count on 20 minutes with a small buffer. I can also tell you that I have never flown home and found that I was at 1%, so that being the case with the Platinum I would have my buffer plus 2 minutes, with which I would do what? If you are flying the Mavic for commercial purposes then OK maybe 2 minutes would be critical, however wouldn't flying home to change to a fresh fully charged battery be wiser? BUT, at the moment, November 2017, there is a price difference of $200-250. with that money you could buy another Mavic battery for $150 given you not 2-3 minutes but 20 minutes of extra flight time and still have $100 in your pocket. Oh and the colour, is the colour worth $250? I think not. You may disagree, I do not know.

22nd November 2017. We have been saying that the noise difference of 4db is negligible but we now have a vision / audio example in the following video.

It is likely that DJI will discontinue the Mavic Pro in the near future making the choice, no choice at all. Another point to note is that it is likely to be January - February 2018 before Australia sees floor stock. We are of course happy to supply you with the Mavic Pro Platinum as and when they become available. The above comments are in the interest of being upfront and honest. We hope that you appreciate an honest opinion.

DJI Mavic Pro Platinum - Fly More Combo stock is due Mid November 2017.

What's Different? Aircraft noise has been reduced by up to 4dB (60% noise power) and extended flight time to 30 minutes with new FOC sinusoidal driver ESCs and 8331 propellers for a quieter, more enjoyable flight experience.

I have just taken out my DJI Mavic Pro for my first ever flight or three. There are several observations worth a mention. Firstly flying the DJI Mavic Pro is SO EASY it is surreal. I am accustomed to joystick controls so I guess that helped but the built in Fly Modes make it so simple. I tested the Tap Fly with a building in the distance, the drone simple flew towards it at a sensible speed and completely in control. I looked at my screen and pushed the cancel and on queue the drone stopped, hovered and waiting for my next instruction. I went back to the control sticks as this sense of "control" was what I wanted on my first flight. I ascended to the maximum legal height of 120m and the VIEW folks, holy mackerel. I hovered and did a slow turn with the video running as the sun rose to light everything in golden light. By now the battery was getting lowish so I pushed the RTH (return to home) and she flew home, landed within 10cm of take off, shut down all with zero input from me.

If you are wondering if the DJI Mavic Pro is easy to fly, it is. The video and still photos are is completely relevant in our 2017 lives AND if you needed any more convincing, it is a bundle of fun too fly also. Ohhhh I should mention that I was happily surprised at how quiet the propellers are when near by and silent when up over it is about 50m or so away from you. That was comfort for me as I live in a mostly retired area and I do not want the neighbours giving me grief.

The DJI Mavic Pro is a small yet powerful drone that turns the sky into your creative canvas easily and without worry, helping you make every moment an aerial moment. Its compact size hides a high degree of complexity that makes it one of DJI’s most sophisticated flying cameras ever. 24 high-performance computing cores, an all-new transmission system with a 4.3mi (7km) range, 5 vision sensors, and a 4K camera stabilized by a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, are at your command with just a push of your thumb or a tap of your finger.

How small is this DJI Mavic anyway?

Inside the Mavic’s pocket-sized remote controller is DJI’s brand new OcuSync transmission technology, with a range of 4.3mi (7km) and Full HD 1080p video streaming.

An unprotected drone could hit obstacles during long distance flight or when descending from an inadequate height in Return to Home mode. The Mavic uses FlightAutonomy technology to sense obstacles up to 49ft (15m) away. It can then bypass these obstacles or brake to hover, preventing accidents even when flying beyond visual range.

Satellite positioning can only help a drone hover in an unobstructed outdoor area free of interference. Without satellites, the drone will not be able to position and become susceptible to drifting. However, with forward and downward vision sensors, the Mavic can hover precisely indoors or in places without GPS.

The Mavic is only 1/6th the size of the Phantom 4 but this reduction in size doesn't mean a reduction in flight time. The Mavic actually flies much longer than you would expect from its compact size. It is capable of reaching an absolute max flight time of 27 minutes and a maximum distance of 8mi (13km) due to its powerful, high efficiency motors.

Mavic supports 4K video at 30fps. No Electronic Image Stabilization is used, ensuring all footage is 4K. We have created a miniaturized, ultra-precise 3-axis gimbal for the Mavic, capable of stabilizing the camera even during high speed motion for smooth video and sharp photos.

Everyone loves a good photo. Whether you just want to take a snap or are building up your portfolio, the Mavic’s 12-megapixel camera with Adobe DNG RAW support is ready to shoot.
