Update 24th February 2018. A few weeks back I started on a personal Vlog of my own and decided to use by GoPro Hero5 Black as the video recorder. Knowing that having superb audio is paramount, I decided to add a Rode Smartlav to the mix. I bought myself a GoPro Mic Adapter, inserted the mic jack on the Smartlav and went about recording several videos. A week or so later, it was time to process the videos ready to be uploaded to YouTube. BLEEP BLEEEEEPPPP BLEEPPPP, no audio. It turns out that the Smartlav has a TRRS mic jack (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) for use with your smart phone BUT the GoPro needs a TRS mic jack (Tip Ring Sleeve) .. hence I have now bought the Rode SC3 ... wish me luck on my next GoPro footage.
Update 8th January 2018. I have just had a chat with tech support at Rode to get the low down on using two Smartlav with a GoPro Hero 5 or 6 Black. The intention is to video two people in conversation with the thought that you could use two of the smartlav+. Rode confirm that you can use two and you will also need a Rode SC6 for both Smartlavs to go into and then you will need a converter called a Rode SC3 that then goes into the GoPro Mic Adapter. If you are looking to keep costs down, then try using just one of the Rode Smartlav + on one of the talkers, but sit close to each other. In post production you should be able to boost the mic when needed. Not ideal and it's work but maybe you could give it a go.
This tiny gadget is so easy to use its just ridiculous. Clip it on. Plug into a smart phone and you're ready for quality audio.
When you are ready to start recording with the Rode SmartLav Plus, clap your hands or use a clapper board so that later you can sync up movement with audio in your final product. This is fine for a few videos but you may find it a worthwhile investment to buy the Rode FilmMaker (which records audio directly onto your camera with the visual at the same time.
Australian pro-audio manufacturer RØDE Microphones has announced the smartLav+, a broadcast-grade update to the popular smartLav lavalier microphone that connects to Apple and Android mobile devices.
You can buy this Rode Microphone with confidence knowing that Cameras Direct is the Rode Australia authorised reseller.
The smartLav was first announced in early 2013 and quickly became one of RØDE’s most popular products, combining great value with the convenience of being able to connect to any available mobile device, including phones and tablets based on iOS or Android. Its omnidirectional capsule makes for versatile and user-friendly placement, without the need for expensive and complicated wireless systems.
Given the success of the microphone RØDE has decided to increase the audio quality even further with the new smartLav+, achieved by updating the microphone capsule to improve sensitivity and lower self-noise (27dBA). The smartLav+ also adds a Kevlar® reinforced cable to ensure that the user cannot stretch or snap the microphone under normal usage conditions.
A foam windshield and clip with integrated cable management is also supplied, along with a storage pouch that is small enough to slide into any camera bag or audio kit.
For iOS platforms RØDE offers the RØDE Rec field recording app, which allows the user to perform a complete range of professional recording functions including one-touch export to Dropbox and SoundCloud, making it the perfect accompaniment for the smartLav+. An updated release of RØDE Rec has just been added to the iTunes store, which provides a tweaked interface and even greater stability. A free version of the app, RØDE Rec LE, is also available for download.
Finally, RØDE’s recently released SC3 adaptor allows the TRRS jack of the smartLav+ to be adapted to suit standard TRS devices, such as a DSLR camera or personal recorder like the Zoom H1.
The Rode SmartLav+ Lapel Microphone comes with a full warranty from Rode Microphones Australia.
