Tamron 100-400mm VC Lenses

Well it took Tamron long enough but they are finally starting to copy the likes of Sigma with a quality built 100-400mm lens at a price that will put both Sigma and surely, Canon on notice, at least in the price department .

Dustin Abbott's introduction of this new Tamron 100-400mm follows. He makes the point that Tamron (and Sigma) has decided to sell you separately, a tripod ring at a cost expected to be about A$200 which to me is very Apple-esque, GoPro-esque. It just seems the way that manufacturers are going with the process of removing parts and selling them later. I suppose you could argue that this makes the lens initial purchase price cheaper but hmmmm does it really?!

Given that this 100-400mm lens, you would presume, is targeted to Wildlife Photographers and Sport Photographers, that the ability of the lens to focus perfectly and track perfectly would have to be a serious consideration.

After watching those two videos, you may well be about ready to pull out your credit card. Frankly, me too. I have said over the past 20 years, that I am not impressed with Tamron lenses for, well everything, but of late I have had to revise that opinion. This change of mind (but still a Canon fan over third party lenses which probably makes me a Canon Snob) started to take hold with the introduction of the Tamron 24-70mm and Tamron 70-200mm G2 lenses and now, this damn 100-400mm. In the following video you can see side by side image comparisons between this Tamron 100-400mm and Canon's 100-400mm lens.

As I shuffle off with my head in my hands back to my Canon lenses, I can assure you that I will not be selling up my Canon lenses BUT, if I was new into the market for a 100-400mm I would have to loose the brand loyalty and seriously consider buying this Tamron 100-400mm instead. One thing that might stop me, is that this lens doesn't have any history as yet. We don't know what it will be like in 5 years for example. Would the professional shooter buy this lens? Hmmm I have been wrong before and these are changing times, so I shall leave without further comment for now.
